System Commissioning & Field Services

System Commissioning & Field Services are the final—and arguably most critical—phases in industrial automation and control system projects. These services ensure that the installed systems operate according to design specifications, safety standards, and client requirements in a live, operational environment.

What Is System Commissioning?

Commissioning is the systematic process of verifying, testing, and fine-tuning a newly installed or upgraded automation system—whether it’s a PLC, SCADA, HMI, control panel, or an entire process line—before it goes into full operation.

What Are Field Services?

Field Services involve on-site technical support, installation, calibration, diagnostics, repair, and upgrades for automation and electrical control systems. Field engineers and technicians play a vital role in ensuring system uptime and operational efficiency.

Commissioning Process Overview

1. Pre-Commissioning

  • Visual inspections of wiring, panels, devices.

  • Power-on safety checks.

  • Verification of all inputs/outputs (I/O checkout).

  • Grounding and insulation resistance tests.

  • Confirm device communication (PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, sensors).

2. Functional Testing

  • Validate PLC logic and sequence of operations.

  • Test HMI screens, alarms, trends, and control functions.

  • SCADA communication and data logging verification.

  • Motor and actuator testing under no-load and load conditions.

3. System Integration Testing

  • End-to-end testing from field device to control system to operator interface.

  • Network testing (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, OPC UA).

  • Interlocks, safety systems, and emergency stop testing.

4. Performance Validation

  • Process simulation or dry runs.

  • Full-load operation testing.

  • Response time, accuracy, and fail-safe operation validation.

5. Client Acceptance Testing (FAT/SAT)

  • Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) – done at the vendor’s facility.

  • Site Acceptance Test (SAT) – done at the client’s location.

  • Client sign-off after meeting agreed specifications.
